It's nice to see the Wanxiang Doneed Co., ltd (SHSE:600371) share price up 14% in a week. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been less than pleasing. The cold reality is that the stock has dropped 33% in one year, under-performing the market.

While the stock has risen 14% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unfortunately Wanxiang Doneed reported an EPS drop of 7.8% for the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 33% share price fall. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, a year ago.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 10% in the twelve months, Wanxiang Doneed shareholders did even worse, losing 31% (even including dividends). However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 1.9% per year over five years.
