Xiamen Intretech's (SZSE:002925) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock rises 7.4% this past week
Xiamen Intretech Inc. (SZSE:002925) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 39% in the last quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. In fact, the share price is down 52% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.
The recent uptick of 7.4% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the three years that the share price fell, Xiamen Intretech's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 38% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 22% compound annual share price fall. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have previously priced some of the drop in.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Xiamen Intretech, it has a TSR of -46% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Xiamen Intretech had a tough year, with a total loss of 9.4% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 13%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 4% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Xiamen Intretech (at least 1 which shouldn't be ignored) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
