Is Jee Technology (SHSE:688162) A Risky Investment?
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We can see that Jee Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:688162) does use debt in its business. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
When Is Debt Dangerous?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. By replacing dilution, though, debt can be an extremely good tool for businesses that need capital to invest in growth at high rates of return. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does Jee Technology Carry?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that as of September 2024 Jee Technology had CN¥355.1m of debt, an increase on CN¥316.1m, over one year. However, its balance sheet shows it holds CN¥1.23b in cash, so it actually has CN¥874.3m net cash.
A Look At Jee Technology's Liabilities
The latest balance sheet data shows that Jee Technology had liabilities of CN¥4.50b due within a year, and liabilities of CN¥450.6m falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had CN¥1.23b in cash and CN¥1.68b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So it has liabilities totalling CN¥2.04b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.
Jee Technology has a market capitalization of CN¥3.83b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. While it does have liabilities worth noting, Jee Technology also has more cash than debt, so we're pretty confident it can manage its debt safely. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Jee Technology can strengthen its balance sheet over time. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
In the last year Jee Technology's revenue was pretty flat, and it made a negative EBIT. While that's not too bad, we'd prefer see growth.
So How Risky Is Jee Technology?
Although Jee Technology had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last twelve months, it generated positive free cash flow of CN¥368m. So although it is loss-making, it doesn't seem to have too much near-term balance sheet risk, keeping in mind the net cash. With revenue growth uninspiring, we'd really need to see some positive EBIT before mustering much enthusiasm for this business. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Jee Technology .
