Even With A 25% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Schwager S.A.'s (SNSE:SCHWAGER) Performance Completely
Those holding Schwager S.A. (SNSE:SCHWAGER) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 25% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 33% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Schwager's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.7x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Chile is similar at about 10x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
Earnings have risen firmly for Schwager recently, which is pleasing to see. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this respectable earnings growth might not be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Schwager's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 11%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 430% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.
With this information, we find it interesting that Schwager is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Schwager's P/E?
Schwager's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/E level with the market. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Schwager revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. When we see strong earnings with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
