Galenica's (VTX:GALE) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's
Galenica AG's (VTX:GALE) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to CHF2.30 on 16th of April. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.8%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.
Galenica's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Based on the last payment, Galenica was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 11.3%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 59% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Galenica Is Still Building Its Track Record
It is great to see that Galenica has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2018, the dividend has gone from CHF1.65 total annually to CHF2.30. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.9% a year over that time. Modest dividend growth is good to see, especially with the payments being relatively stable. However, the payment history is relatively short and we wouldn't want to rely on this dividend too much.
Galenica Could Grow Its Dividend
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. We are encouraged to see that Galenica has grown earnings per share at 7.7% per year over the past five years. Since earnings per share is growing at an acceptable rate, and the payout policy is balanced, we think the company is positioning itself well to grow earnings and dividends in the future.
In Summary
Overall, it's great to see the dividend being raised and that it is still in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
