Slammed 29% Ascom Holding AG (VTX:ASCN) Screens Well Here But There Might Be A Catch

Published
SWX:ASCN

The Ascom Holding AG (VTX:ASCN) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 29%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 54% share price decline.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Ascom Holding's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.4x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Switzerland, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 22x and even P/E's above 32x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Ascom Holding has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Ascom Holding would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 58% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 168% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 10% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 12% each year, which is not materially different.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Ascom Holding's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

Ascom Holding's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Ascom Holding currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is in line with the wider market. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide more support to the share price.
