TSX:SAM Earnings and Revenue History August 5th 2024

To understand the value of a company's earnings growth, it is imperative to consider any dilution of shareholders' interests. In fact, Starcore International Mines increased the number of shares on issue by 36% over the last twelve months by issuing new shares. That means its earnings are split among a greater number of shares. To celebrate net income while ignoring dilution is like rejoicing because you have a single slice of a larger pizza, but ignoring the fact that the pizza is now cut into many more slices. A Look At The Impact Of Starcore International Mines' Dilution On Its Earnings Per Share (EPS)

As it happens, we don't know how much the company made or lost three years ago, because we don't have the data. Zooming in to the last year, we still can't talk about growth rates coherently, since it made a loss last year. What we do know is that while it's great to see a profit over the last twelve months, that profit would have been better, on a per share basis, if the company hadn't needed to issue shares. So you can see that the dilution has had a fairly significant impact on shareholders.

If Starcore International Mines' EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. But on the other hand, we'd be far less excited to learn profit (but not EPS) was improving. For the ordinary retail shareholder, EPS is a great measure to check your hypothetical "share" of the company's profit.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Alongside that dilution, it's also important to note that Starcore International Mines' profit suffered from unusual items, which reduced profit by CA$273k in the last twelve months. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect Starcore International Mines to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.

Our Take On Starcore International Mines' Profit Performance

To sum it all up, Starcore International Mines took a hit from unusual items which pushed its profit down; without that, it would have made more money. But unfortunately the dilution means that shareholders now own a smaller proportion of the company (assuming they maintained the same number of shares). That will weigh on earnings per share, even if it is not reflected in net income. Based on these factors, we think it's very unlikely that Starcore International Mines' statutory profits make it seem much weaker than it is. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. Our analysis shows 3 warning signs for Starcore International Mines (2 shouldn't be ignored!) and we strongly recommend you look at them before investing.
