Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Mandalay Resources Corporation's (TSE:MND) Earnings Despite 28% Price Jump

Despite an already strong run, Mandalay Resources Corporation (TSE:MND) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 28% in the last thirty days. The annual gain comes to 145% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Mandalay Resources may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.6x, since almost half of all companies in Canada have P/E ratios greater than 15x and even P/E's higher than 32x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Mandalay Resources has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Mandalay Resources would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 380% gain to the company's bottom line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 47% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 184% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 24%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Mandalay Resources is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Mandalay Resources' P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Mandalay Resources' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
