Journey Energy Inc. (TSE:JOY) Stock Catapults 29% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Market
Journey Energy Inc. (TSE:JOY) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 97%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Journey Energy may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 13.8x, since almost half of all companies in Canada have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 31x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Journey Energy certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Journey Energy would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 337%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 76% drop in EPS in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 14% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 22%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Journey Energy is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
What We Can Learn From Journey Energy's P/E?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Journey Energy's P/E close to the market median. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Journey Energy maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
There are also other vital risk factors to consider and we've discovered 2 warning signs for Journey Energy (1 is significant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
