Guardian Capital Group (TSE:GCG.A) Is Increasing Its Dividend To CA$0.37
Guardian Capital Group Limited (TSE:GCG.A) will increase its dividend on the 19th of April to CA$0.37, which is 8.8% higher than last year's payment from the same period of CA$0.34. This takes the dividend yield to 2.7%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

Guardian Capital Group Doesn't Earn Enough To Cover Its Payments
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Even though Guardian Capital Group isn't generating a profit, it is generating healthy free cash flows that easily cover the dividend. This gives us some comfort about the level of the dividend payments.
Looking forward, EPS could fall by 16.6% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 564%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.
Guardian Capital Group Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from CA$0.20 total annually to CA$1.36. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 21% per annum over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.
Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. However, things aren't all that rosy. Over the past five years, it looks as though Guardian Capital Group's EPS has declined at around 17% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
