There's Reason For Concern Over Serena Energia S.A.'s (BVMF:SRNA3) Massive 32% Price Jump
Serena Energia S.A. (BVMF:SRNA3) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 32% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 25% over that time.
After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in Brazil have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 8x, you may consider Serena Energia as a stock to avoid entirely with its 21.6x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Recent times have been advantageous for Serena Energia as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Serena Energia would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 291%. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 44% as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 15%.
In light of this, it's alarming that Serena Energia's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a very good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Serena Energia's P/E?
The strong share price surge has got Serena Energia's P/E rushing to great heights as well. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
Our examination of Serena Energia's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a poor outlook with earnings heading backwards, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
