Ânima Holding S.A.'s (BVMF:ANIM3) 29% Dip Still Leaving Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over Its P/SRatio
Ânima Holding S.A. (BVMF:ANIM3) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 29% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 22% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Ânima Holding's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Consumer Services industry in Brazil, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.5x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Ânima Holding's Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Ânima Holding has been relatively sluggish. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S ratio from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Ânima Holding's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 4.9% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 123% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.0% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 6.8% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's curious that Ânima Holding's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Ânima Holding's P/S?
Ânima Holding's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Given that Ânima Holding's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
