Magontec Limited (ASX:MGL) Looks Inexpensive But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

Published
ASX:MGL

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x Magontec Limited (ASX:MGL) is definitely a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Metals and Mining companies in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 79.2x and even P/S above 485x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Magontec's Recent Performance Look Like?

Magontec could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Magontec's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Magontec?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Magontec's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 35%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 7.7% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 27% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 78% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Magontec's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Magontec's P/S

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of Magontec's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
