We Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Pro Medicus (ASX:PME) Passed With Ease
It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Pro Medicus (ASX:PME). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Pro Medicus with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Quickly Is Pro Medicus Increasing Earnings Per Share?
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. It certainly is nice to see that Pro Medicus has managed to grow EPS by 32% per year over three years. So it's not surprising to see the company trades on a very high multiple of (past) earnings.
Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. The good news is that Pro Medicus is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.2 percentage points to 66%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Pro Medicus Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Investors are always searching for a vote of confidence in the companies they hold and insider buying is one of the key indicators for optimism on the market. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.
One positive for Pro Medicus, is that company insiders spent AU$59k acquiring shares in the last year. While this investment may be modest, it is great considering the lack of insider selling.
And the insider buying isn't the only sign of alignment between shareholders and the board, since Pro Medicus insiders own more than a third of the company. In fact, they own 55% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. This makes it apparent they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - a positive for shareholders with a sit and hold strategy. AU$3.3b This is an incredible endorsement from them.
While insiders are apparently happy to hold and accumulate shares, that is just part of the big picture. The cherry on top is that the CEO, Sam Hupert is paid comparatively modestly to CEOs at similar sized companies. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Pro Medicus, with market caps between AU$3.0b and AU$9.5b, is around AU$3.5m.
The Pro Medicus CEO received total compensation of just AU$510k in the year to June 2022. That looks like a modest pay packet, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.
Should You Add Pro Medicus To Your Watchlist?
You can't deny that Pro Medicus has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. On top of that, insiders own a significant stake in the company and have been buying more shares. So it's fair to say that this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist. One of Buffett's considerations when discussing businesses is if they are capital light or capital intensive. Generally, a company with a high return on equity is capital light, and can thus fund growth more easily. So you might want to check this graph comparing Pro Medicus' ROE with industry peers (and the market at large).
