HEG (NSE:HEG) Has Rewarded Shareholders With An Exceptional 369% Total Return On Their Investment
It hasn't been the best quarter for HEG Limited (NSE:HEG) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 12% in that time. But that doesn't undermine the fantastic longer term performance (measured over five years). In fact, during that period, the share price climbed 322%. Impressive! So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 34% decline over the last twelve months.

HEG wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between HEG's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for HEG shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 369%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
HEG shareholders are down 33% for the year, but the market itself is up 6.4%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 36%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand HEG better, we need to consider many other factors.
