Cibus Nordic Real Estate AB (publ) (STO:CIBUS) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 3 days. Typically, the ex-dividend date is one business day before the record date which is the date on which a company determines the shareholders eligible to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Accordingly, Cibus Nordic Real Estate investors that purchase the stock on or after the 16th of April will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 22nd of April.

The company's upcoming dividend is €0.07 a share, following on from the last 12 months, when the company distributed a total of €0.90 per share to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that Cibus Nordic Real Estate has a trailing yield of 7.4% on the current share price of kr0139.30. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! That's why we should always check whether the dividend payments appear sustainable, and if the company is growing.

Dividends are usually paid out of company profits, so if a company pays out more than it earned then its dividend is usually at greater risk of being cut. Cibus Nordic Real Estate lost money last year, so the fact that it's paying a dividend is certainly disconcerting. There might be a good reason for this, but we'd want to look into it further before getting comfortable. Given that the company reported a loss last year, we now need to see if it generated enough free cash flow to fund the dividend. If Cibus Nordic Real Estate didn't generate enough cash to pay the dividend, then it must have either paid from cash in the bank or by borrowing money, neither of which is sustainable in the long term. It distributed 47% of its free cash flow as dividends, a comfortable payout level for most companies.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Companies with falling earnings are riskier for dividend shareholders. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. Cibus Nordic Real Estate was unprofitable last year and, unfortunately, the general trend suggests its earnings have been in decline over the last five years, making us wonder if the dividend is sustainable at all.

We'd also point out that Cibus Nordic Real Estate issued a meaningful number of new shares in the past year. It's hard to grow dividends per share when a company keeps creating new shares.

Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. Cibus Nordic Real Estate has delivered an average of 2.0% per year annual increase in its dividend, based on the past six years of dividend payments.
