Even if it's not a huge purchase, we think it was good to see that Mark Hunter, the Independent Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of The Artisanal Spirits Company plc (LON:ART) recently shelled out UK£46k to buy stock, at UK£0.44 per share. However, it only increased their shares held by 7.9%, and it wasn't a huge purchase by absolute value, either.

Artisanal Spirits Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent purchase by Mark Hunter is the biggest insider purchase of Artisanal Spirits shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that even when the share price was higher than UK£0.43 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

While Artisanal Spirits insiders bought shares during the last year, they didn't sell. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. Insider Ownership Of Artisanal Spirits

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Artisanal Spirits insiders own 28% of the company, worth about UK£8.6m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
