TSS, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSSI) Soars 25% But It's A Story Of Risk Vs Reward
TSS, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSSI) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. This latest share price bounce rounds out a remarkable 3,682% gain over the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, TSS' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.2x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the IT industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.9x and even P/S above 6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does TSS' Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times have been quite advantageous for TSS as its revenue has been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as TSS' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 199%. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, thanks in part to the last 12 months of revenue growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 11% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this in mind, we find it intriguing that TSS' P/S isn't as high compared to that of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Key Takeaway
Despite TSS' share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We're very surprised to see TSS currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
