When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. One great example is Prestige Consumer Healthcare Inc. (NYSE:PBH) which saw its share price drive 138% higher over five years. On top of that, the share price is up 13% in about a quarter.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Prestige Consumer Healthcare actually saw its EPS drop 1.6% per year. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.

So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

In contrast revenue growth of 4.2% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Prestige Consumer Healthcare is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

A Different Perspective

Prestige Consumer Healthcare shareholders are up 12% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 19% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Prestige Consumer Healthcare better, we need to consider many other factors.
