Sera Prognostics (NASDAQ:SERA) Is In A Strong Position To Grow Its Business
There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
So should Sera Prognostics (NASDAQ:SERA) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

How Long Is Sera Prognostics' Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. As at September 2024, Sera Prognostics had cash of US$50m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was US$16m. That means it had a cash runway of about 3.2 years as of September 2024. There's no doubt that this is a reassuringly long runway. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Sera Prognostics' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
In our view, Sera Prognostics doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just US$94k in the last twelve months. As a result, we think it's a bit early to focus on the revenue growth, so we'll limit ourselves to looking at how the cash burn is changing over time. While it hardly paints a picture of imminent growth, the fact that it has reduced its cash burn by 44% over the last year suggests some degree of prudence. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can Sera Prognostics Raise Cash?
Even though it has reduced its cash burn recently, shareholders should still consider how easy it would be for Sera Prognostics to raise more cash in the future. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Since it has a market capitalisation of US$281m, Sera Prognostics' US$16m in cash burn equates to about 5.6% of its market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.
Is Sera Prognostics' Cash Burn A Worry?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Sera Prognostics is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. And even its cash burn reduction was very encouraging. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 5 warning signs for Sera Prognostics (1 is concerning!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
