BridgeBio Pharma, Inc. (NASDAQ:BBIO) shareholders will have a reason to smile today, with the analysts making substantial upgrades to this year's statutory forecasts. The revenue forecast for this year has experienced a facelift, with the analysts now much more optimistic on its sales pipeline.

Following the latest upgrade, the eight analysts covering BridgeBio Pharma provided consensus estimates of US$32m revenue in 2023, which would reflect a substantial 59% decline on its sales over the past 12 months. Per-share losses are expected to explode, reaching US$3.21 per share. Yet before this consensus update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$25m and losses of US$3.01 per share in 2023. So there's been quite a change-up of views after the recent consensus updates, with the analysts significantly increasing their revenue forecasts while also expecting losses per share to increase. It looks like the revenue growth will not be achieved without incremental costs.

Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 69% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2023. That is a notable change from historical growth of 42% over the last three years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 17% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - BridgeBio Pharma is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Fortunately, they also upgraded their revenue estimates, and are forecasting revenues to grow slower than the wider market. Given that analysts appear to be expecting substantial improvement in the sales pipeline, now could be the right time to take another look at BridgeBio Pharma.
