Quest Diagnostics Incorporated (NYSE:DGX) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 21st of April to $0.80. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 1.8%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Quest Diagnostics' Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. However, prior to this announcement, Quest Diagnostics' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 34.6%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 31%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Quest Diagnostics Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was $1.32, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $3.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9.3% a year over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Earnings has been rising at 4.6% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. While growth may be thin on the ground, Quest Diagnostics could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.
We Really Like Quest Diagnostics' Dividend
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Quest Diagnostics is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
