Virco Mfg. Corporation (NASDAQ:VIRC) Shares Fly 27% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
Those holding Virco Mfg. Corporation (NASDAQ:VIRC) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 19% is also fairly reasonable.
Even after such a large jump in price, Virco Mfg may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 19x and even P/E's higher than 35x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.
Virco Mfg hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Virco Mfg's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 12% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 11% as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 15% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we are not surprised that Virco Mfg is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Virco Mfg's P/E
Even after such a strong price move, Virco Mfg's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Virco Mfg maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
