On average, over time, stock markets tend to rise higher. This makes investing attractive. But not every stock you buy will perform as well as the overall market. Over the last year the Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TWSE:2354) share price is up 21%, but that's less than the broader market return. However, the stock hasn't done so well in the longer term, with the stock only up 8.3% in three years.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 3.5%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Foxconn Technology was able to grow EPS by 3.8% in the last twelve months. The share price gain of 21% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, Foxconn Technology's TSR for the last 1 year was 24%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Foxconn Technology shareholders gained a total return of 24% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 5% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Foxconn Technology you should be aware of, and 1 of them shouldn't be ignored.
