A Closer Look At Altri SGPS' Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to September 2024, Altri SGPS recorded an accrual ratio of -0.16. That indicates that its free cash flow quite significantly exceeded its statutory profit. To wit, it produced free cash flow of €227m during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of €104.2m. Altri SGPS' free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see. Having said that, there is more to the story. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
While the accrual ratio might bode well, we also note that Altri SGPS' profit was boosted by unusual items worth €10m in the last twelve months. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. If Altri SGPS doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.
Our Take On Altri SGPS' Profit Performance
In conclusion, Altri SGPS' accrual ratio suggests its statutory earnings are of good quality, but on the other hand the profits were boosted by unusual items. Considering all the aforementioned, we'd venture that Altri SGPS' profit result is a pretty good guide to its true profitability, albeit a bit on the conservative side.
