Optimistic Investors Push Polwax S.A. (WSE:PWX) Shares Up 25% But Growth Is Lacking
Polwax S.A. (WSE:PWX) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 34% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Polwax's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Chemicals industry in Poland, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.5x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Polwax Performed Recently?
For instance, Polwax's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Polwax's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 26%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 11% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 78% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it interesting that Polwax is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Key Takeaway
Polwax appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Polwax's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, the probability of a share price decline will become quite substantial, placing shareholders at risk.
