There's No Escaping DB HiTek CO., LTD.'s (KRX:000990) Muted Earnings Despite A 27% Share Price Rise
The DB HiTek CO., LTD. (KRX:000990) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 27%. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 12% over that time.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, DB HiTek may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.5x, since almost half of all companies in Korea have P/E ratios greater than 12x and even P/E's higher than 25x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.
DB HiTek hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For DB HiTek?
DB HiTek's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 11%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year EPS growth is still a noteworthy 16% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 5.4% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 29%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why DB HiTek is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On DB HiTek's P/E
Despite DB HiTek's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that DB HiTek maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with DB HiTek, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
