More Unpleasant Surprises Could Be In Store For Artist United Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:321820) Shares After Tumbling 40%
Artist United Inc. (KOSDAQ:321820) shares have had a horrible month, losing 40% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 21% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for thinking Artist United is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 7.4x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Media industry have P/S ratios below 1.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Artist United's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Artist United over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Artist United, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, Artist United would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 16%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 32% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 1.0% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.
With this information, we find it concerning that Artist United is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Artist United's P/S?
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Artist United's very lofty P/S. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Artist United currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
