Market Cool On Zinus, Inc's (KRX:013890) Revenues Pushing Shares 34% Lower
Zinus, Inc (KRX:013890) shares have had a horrible month, losing 34% after a relatively good period beforehand. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 39% in the last year.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Zinus' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Consumer Durables industry is similar at about 0.5x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Zinus' P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Zinus hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Zinus' to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 7.6%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 18% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 13% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 5.1%, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Zinus' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Zinus' P/S?
Following Zinus' share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, Zinus' P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
