The board of Nippon Gas Co., Ltd. (TSE:8174) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥46.25 on the 18th of November, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.9%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Nippon Gas' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, Nippon Gas' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 12.4%. If recent patterns in the dividend continues, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 95% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was ¥4.33, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥92.50. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 36% over that duration. Nippon Gas has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see that Nippon Gas has been growing its earnings per share at 23% a year over the past five years. The company's earnings per share has grown rapidly in recent years, and it has a good balance between reinvesting and paying dividends to shareholders, so we think that Nippon Gas could prove to be a strong dividend payer.

Nippon Gas Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Nippon Gas is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
