Taiyo Yuden (TSE:6976) Is Paying Out A Dividend Of ¥45.00

Published
TSE:6976

The board of Taiyo Yuden Co., Ltd. (TSE:6976) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥45.00 per share on the 30th of June. Based on this payment, the dividend yield on the company's stock will be 4.1%, which is an attractive boost to shareholder returns.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Taiyo Yuden's stock price has reduced by 33% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

Taiyo Yuden's Future Dividends May Potentially Be At Risk

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Before this announcement, Taiyo Yuden was paying out 132% of what it was earning, and not generating any free cash flows either. This high of a dividend payment could start to put pressure on the balance sheet in the future.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 32.3%. However, if the dividend continues along recent trends, it could start putting pressure on the balance sheet with the payout ratio reaching 123% over the next year.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥10.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥90.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 25% a year over that time. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Taiyo Yuden's EPS has fallen by approximately 21% per year during the past five years. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future. On the bright side, earnings are predicted to gain some ground over the next year, but until this turns into a pattern we wouldn't be feeling too comfortable.

We're Not Big Fans Of Taiyo Yuden's Dividend

Overall, this isn't a great candidate as an income investment, even though the dividend was stable this year. The company isn't making enough to be paying as much as it is, and the other factors don't look particularly promising either. Overall, this doesn't get us very excited from an income standpoint.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock.
