Alps Alpine (TSE:6770) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year

Published
TSE:6770

The board of Alps Alpine Co., Ltd. (TSE:6770) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥30.00 on the 2nd of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 3.7%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Alps Alpine Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. While Alps Alpine is not profitable, it is paying out less than 75% of its free cash flow, which means that there is plenty left over for reinvestment into the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to rise by 68.0%. It's encouraging to see things moving in the right direction, but this probably won't be enough for the company to turn a profit. The healthy cash flows are definitely a good sign though, so we wouldn't panic just yet, especially with the earnings growing.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥10.00 in 2014, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥60.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 20% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

Dividend Growth Is Doubtful

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Over the past five years, it looks as though Alps Alpine's EPS has declined at around 9.2% a year. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.

Alps Alpine's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Alps Alpine will make a great income stock. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
