TKP Corporation's (TSE:3479) 26% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Revenues
To the annoyance of some shareholders, TKP Corporation (TSE:3479) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 38% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking TKP is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.3x, considering almost half the companies in Japan's Real Estate industry have P/S ratios below 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does TKP's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, TKP's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like TKP's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 8.3%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 12% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 32% each year during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 4.4% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why TKP's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From TKP's P/S?
There's still some elevation in TKP's P/S, even if the same can't be said for its share price recently. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of TKP's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
