Be Wary Of TCI Express (NSE:TCIEXP) And Its Returns On Capital
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Having said that, while the ROCE is currently high for TCI Express (NSE:TCIEXP), we aren't jumping out of our chairs because returns are decreasing.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for TCI Express:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.27 = ₹1.8b ÷ (₹8.0b - ₹1.2b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).
Therefore, TCI Express has an ROCE of 27%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 13% earned by companies in a similar industry.

How Are Returns Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at TCI Express, we didn't gain much confidence. Historically returns on capital were even higher at 46%, but they have dropped over the last five years. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
On a side note, TCI Express has done well to pay down its current liabilities to 15% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
In Conclusion...
To conclude, we've found that TCI Express is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Although the market must be expecting these trends to improve because the stock has gained 61% over the last five years. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
