Earnings Not Telling The Story For Sasken Technologies Limited (NSE:SASKEN)
Sasken Technologies Limited's (NSE:SASKEN) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 47.5x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 31x and even P/E's below 18x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Sasken Technologies over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Sasken Technologies' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 29%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 52% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.
In light of this, it's alarming that Sasken Technologies' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Sasken Technologies' P/E?
It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Sasken Technologies currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its recent earnings have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 4 warning signs for Sasken Technologies (1 can't be ignored!) that you need to be mindful of.
