The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Kopran Limited's (NSE:KOPRAN) Earnings Yet As Shares Tumble 29%
The Kopran Limited (NSE:KOPRAN) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 29%. Longer-term shareholders would now have taken a real hit with the stock declining 9.2% in the last year.
Since its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 32x, you may consider Kopran as an attractive investment with its 20.6x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Kopran has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Kopran's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 68% gain to the company's bottom line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 12% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 27% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that Kopran's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.
The Key Takeaway
The softening of Kopran's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Kopran maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
