Market Participants Recognise Proventus Agrocom Limited's (NSE:PROV) Earnings Pushing Shares 28% Higher

Published
NSEI:PROV

The Proventus Agrocom Limited (NSE:PROV) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 31% in the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 34x, you may consider Proventus Agrocom as a stock to avoid entirely with its 62x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Proventus Agrocom as its earnings have been rising very briskly. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Proventus Agrocom would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 54% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 179% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 26% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

With this information, we can see why Proventus Agrocom is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Proventus Agrocom's P/E

Shares in Proventus Agrocom have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Proventus Agrocom revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its high P/E, given they look better than current market expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
