The Market Lifts Priti International Limited (NSE:PRITI) Shares 28% But It Can Do More
Priti International Limited (NSE:PRITI) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 28% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 16% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Priti International may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 25x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios greater than 34x and even P/E's higher than 64x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Priti International has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this respectable earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Priti International's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.3% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 95% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 26% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is pretty similar based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
With this information, we find it odd that Priti International is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Priti International's P/E?
Despite Priti International's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Priti International revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look similar to current market expectations. When we see average earnings with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
