Optimism for Godrej Industries (NSE:GODREJIND) has grown this past week, despite five-year decline in earnings

NSEI:GODREJIND

While Godrej Industries Limited (NSE:GODREJIND) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 10% in the last quarter. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. We think most investors would be happy with the 163% return, over that period. To some, the recent pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a fast rise. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Godrej Industries actually saw its EPS drop 6.7% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

On the other hand, Godrej Industries' revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 13% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Godrej Industries has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 62% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 21% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Godrej Industries better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance.
