A Closer Look At Victory Supermarket Chain's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. You could think of the accrual ratio from cashflow as the 'non-FCF profit ratio'.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to September 2024, Victory Supermarket Chain recorded an accrual ratio of -0.37. That indicates that its free cash flow quite significantly exceeded its statutory profit. In fact, it had free cash flow of ₪176m in the last year, which was a lot more than its statutory profit of ₪54.3m. Victory Supermarket Chain's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On Victory Supermarket Chain's Profit Performance
As we discussed above, Victory Supermarket Chain's accrual ratio indicates strong conversion of profit to free cash flow, which is a positive for the company. Based on this observation, we consider it possible that Victory Supermarket Chain's statutory profit actually understates its earnings potential! And on top of that, its earnings per share increased by 45% in the last year. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. While earnings are important, another area to consider is the balance sheet. We've done some analysis and you can see our take on Victory Supermarket Chain's balance sheet by clicking here.
