Risks Still Elevated At These Prices As DIT Group Limited (HKG:726) Shares Dive 31%

Published
SEHK:726

The DIT Group Limited (HKG:726) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 31%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 43% in that time.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, it's still not a stretch to say that DIT Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Real Estate industry in Hong Kong, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does DIT Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For instance, DIT Group's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For DIT Group?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, DIT Group would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 54%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 54% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 4.7% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term revenue decline into perspective.

With this information, we find it concerning that DIT Group is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

With its share price dropping off a cliff, the P/S for DIT Group looks to be in line with the rest of the Real Estate industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We find it unexpected that DIT Group trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 4 warning signs for DIT Group (2 shouldn't be ignored!) that you need to be mindful of.
