The analysts covering Frontage Holdings Corporation (HKG:1521) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts were both revised downwards, with the analysts seeing grey clouds on the horizon.

Following the downgrade, the latest consensus from Frontage Holdings' six analysts is for revenues of US$277m in 2023, which would reflect a satisfactory 6.7% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are forecast to be US$0.0084, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Prior to this update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$317m and earnings per share (EPS) of US$0.017 in 2023. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a large cut to earnings per share numbers as well.

The consensus price target fell 30% to US$0.29, with the weaker earnings outlook clearly leading analyst valuation estimates. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. There are some variant perceptions on Frontage Holdings, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$0.37 and the most bearish at US$0.19 per share. This is a fairly broad spread of estimates, suggesting that the analysts are forecasting a wide range of possible outcomes for the business.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that Frontage Holdings' revenue growth is expected to slow, with the forecast 6.7% annualised growth rate until the end of 2023 being well below the historical 30% p.a. growth over the last three years. By way of comparison, the other companies in this industry with analyst coverage are forecast to grow their revenue at 18% per year. Factoring in the forecast slowdown in growth, it seems obvious that Frontage Holdings is also expected to grow slower than other industry participants.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their earnings per share estimates, expecting a clear decline in business conditions. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. After such a stark change in sentiment from analysts, we'd understand if readers now felt a bit wary of Frontage Holdings.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Frontage Holdings going out to 2025, and you can see them free on our platform here.
