Insiders were net sellers of ITV plc's (LON:ITV ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At ITV

The MD of Streaming, Rufus Radcliffe, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£469k worth of shares at a price of UK£0.75 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (UK£0.78). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was 100% of Rufus Radcliffe's holding. Rufus Radcliffe was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Have ITV Insiders Traded Recently?

There was some insider buying at ITV over the last quarter. Independent Non-Executive Director Sharmila Nebhrajani purchased UK£8.0k worth of shares in that period. It's good to see the insider buying, as well as the lack of recent sellers. But in this case the amount purchased means the recent transaction may not be very meaningful on its own.

Insider Ownership Of ITV

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. From our data, it seems that ITV insiders own 0.2% of the company, worth about UK£7.3m. Overall, this level of ownership isn't that impressive, but it's certainly better than nothing!
