QinetiQ Group's (LON:QQ.) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

Published
LSE:QQ.

QinetiQ Group plc (LON:QQ.) will increase its dividend on the 22nd of August to £0.0565, which is 6.6% higher than last year's payment from the same period of £0.053. The payment will take the dividend yield to 1.7%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that QinetiQ Group's stock price has increased by 40% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

QinetiQ Group's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. However, QinetiQ Group's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 41.2%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 25% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

QinetiQ Group Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from £0.041 total annually to £0.0825. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 7.2% a year over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, QinetiQ Group has only grown its earnings per share at 4.0% per annum over the past five years. While growth may be thin on the ground, QinetiQ Group could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.

We Really Like QinetiQ Group's Dividend

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
