4.9% earnings growth over 3 years has not materialized into gains for Pharmaron Beijing (SZSE:300759) shareholders over that period

Pharmaron Beijing Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300759) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 42% in the last quarter. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Regrettably, the share price slid 68% in that period. So the improvement may be a real relief to some. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Although the share price is down over three years, Pharmaron Beijing actually managed to grow EPS by 15% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.

It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price.

With a rather small yield of just 0.7% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. Revenue is actually up 20% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Pharmaron Beijing more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 0.6% in the twelve months, Pharmaron Beijing shareholders did even worse, losing 12% (even including dividends). However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 2%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Pharmaron Beijing better, we need to consider many other factors.
