Have Insiders Sold Precision Drilling Shares Recently?

Published
TSX:PD

We'd be surprised if Precision Drilling Corporation (TSE:PD) shareholders haven't noticed that the Chief Financial Officer, Carey Ford, recently sold CA$397k worth of stock at CA$77.79 per share. On the bright side, that sale was only 7.6% of their holding, so we doubt it's very meaningful, on its own.

Precision Drilling Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Carey Ford is the biggest insider sale of Precision Drilling shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of CA$76.75. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Precision Drilling shares, than buying. Insider Ownership Of Precision Drilling

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 4.3% of Precision Drilling shares, worth about CA$45m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Precision Drilling Tell Us?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. While insiders do own shares, they don't own a heap, and they have been selling. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
