Investors Don't See Light At End Of PPK Group Limited's (ASX:PPK) Tunnel And Push Stock Down 28%
PPK Group Limited (ASX:PPK) shares have had a horrible month, losing 28% after a relatively good period beforehand. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 62% share price decline.
After such a large drop in price, PPK Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Chemicals industry in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.2x and even P/S above 29x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How PPK Group Has Been Performing
With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, PPK Group has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. Those who are bullish on PPK Group will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

PPK Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an explosive gain to the company's top line. Still, revenue has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 924% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why PPK Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
PPK Group's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of PPK Group revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with PPK Group (at least 3 which don't sit too well with us), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
