Genco Shipping & Trading (NYSE:GNK) Seems To Use Debt Quite Sensibly
The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. Importantly, Genco Shipping & Trading Limited (NYSE:GNK) does carry debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. Part and parcel of capitalism is the process of 'creative destruction' where failed businesses are mercilessly liquidated by their bankers. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. When we think about a company's use of debt, we first look at cash and debt together.
How Much Debt Does Genco Shipping & Trading Carry?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Genco Shipping & Trading had debt of US$82.7m at the end of March 2025, a reduction from US$160.7m over a year. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$30.2m, its net debt is less, at about US$52.4m.
How Strong Is Genco Shipping & Trading's Balance Sheet?
Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Genco Shipping & Trading had liabilities of US$45.6m due within 12 months and liabilities of US$88.3m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$30.2m and US$18.2m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total US$85.4m more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.
Given Genco Shipping & Trading has a market capitalization of US$674.0m, it's hard to believe these liabilities pose much threat. But there are sufficient liabilities that we would certainly recommend shareholders continue to monitor the balance sheet, going forward.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.
Looking at its net debt to EBITDA of 0.55 and interest cover of 4.8 times, it seems to us that Genco Shipping & Trading is probably using debt in a pretty reasonable way. So we'd recommend keeping a close eye on the impact financing costs are having on the business. The bad news is that Genco Shipping & Trading saw its EBIT decline by 19% over the last year. If that sort of decline is not arrested, then the managing its debt will be harder than selling broccoli flavoured ice-cream for a premium. Finally, a company can only pay off debt with cold hard cash, not accounting profits. So we clearly need to look at whether that EBIT is leading to corresponding free cash flow. Over the last three years, Genco Shipping & Trading recorded free cash flow worth a fulsome 85% of its EBIT, which is stronger than we'd usually expect. That positions it well to pay down debt if desirable to do so.
Our View
On our analysis Genco Shipping & Trading's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow should signal that it won't have too much trouble with its debt. However, our other observations weren't so heartening. In particular, EBIT growth rate gives us cold feet. When we consider all the elements mentioned above, it seems to us that Genco Shipping & Trading is managing its debt quite well. But a word of caution: we think debt levels are high enough to justify ongoing monitoring. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet.
