Lyft, Inc. (NASDAQ:LYFT) Looks Just Right With A 26% Price Jump
Despite an already strong run, Lyft, Inc. (NASDAQ:LYFT) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 32% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, there still wouldn't be many who think Lyft's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.5x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Transportation industry is similar at about 1.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Lyft Has Been Performing
Lyft certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this strong revenue performance might be about to tail off. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Lyft's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 15% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 61% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 12% per year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 10% each year, which is not materially different.
With this in mind, it makes sense that Lyft's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on while the company is keeping a low profile.
The Bottom Line On Lyft's P/S
Lyft appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our look at Lyft's revenue growth estimates show that its P/S is about what we expect, as both metrics follow closely with the industry averages. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenue won't throw up any surprises. All things considered, if the P/S and revenue estimates contain no major shocks, then it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future.
