Further weakness as ATN International (NASDAQ:ATNI) drops 11% this week, taking five-year losses to 72%
Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held ATN International, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATNI) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 75% in that time. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 41%. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 19% in a month. Importantly, this could be a market reaction to the recently released financial results. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.
After losing 11% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.
Given that ATN International didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
Over five years, ATN International grew its revenue at 12% per year. That's a pretty good rate for a long time period. So it is unexpected to see the stock down 12% per year in the last five years. The truth is that the growth might be below expectations, and investors are probably worried about the continual losses.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of ATN International, it has a TSR of -72% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Investors in ATN International had a tough year, with a total loss of 37% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 22%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 11% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with ATN International (at least 2 which make us uncomfortable) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
